Danush (15), a Class 11 student and son of Thanikachalam of Alaputhur near Chengam, was electrocuted after he came into contact with an overhead live wire while trying to remove a tree branch which had fallen on the roof of his house. The boy was declared dead on arrival at the Chengam Government Hospital, following which Chengam police registered a case.

Three shops in Arni market, reportedly constructed more than 35 years ago, collapsed under the impact of heavy winds.

Several trees were reportedly felled in Walajahpet and Arakkonam in Vellore district, while many low-lying areas in Arakkonam town were flooded due to rain. Sugarcane, paddy and groundnut crops being cultivated in nearly 100 acres near Thandarampattu in Tiruvannamalai district were also damaged.

Meanwhile, officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Western suburbs of Chennai received mild rain on Saturday afternoon. Forecasting the possibility of rain on Sunday as well, a RMC official said, “Winds blowing at a lower level will help in creating favourable conditions for afternoon thunderstorms in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri and parts of Kancheepuram.”

The maximum temperature recorded in Chennai is showing signs of decrease in the last two days. However, sultry weather conditions prevailed due to high humidity, which is making everyone sweat, the official added.
