Thoothukudi Police firing: Ex-judge to begin probe on June 4

The one-member inquiry commission of retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan would commence its probe into the police firing that took place during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi in which 13 people were killed, from Monday (June 4).

A public notice released by the Commission on Saturday appealed to the public, either direct witnesses or who knew details about the cause of violence, to submit their complaints latest by June 22.
The complaints could be filed as an affidavit at the commission’s office on Greenways Road in Chennai.
Explaining the agenda of the commission, the notification said it would inquire into the reasons that led to the violence and police firing during the 100th day of the protest demanding the closure of the Sterlite copper smelter plant.
‘’The commission will also investigate if the police force was used according to the situation and whether due procedures were followed before the firing’’, it said.
The commission, which would also look into any violation by the police personnel, in its report would make recommendations to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
Two-member SHRC team starts inquiry at Thoothukudi 
A two-member delegation of D Jayachandran and A Chittaranjan Mohandoss, both members of the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Saturday, visited the government hospital accompanied by the District Collector Sandeep Nanduri and started their inquiry with the injured and with the family members of people who were killed in police firing to ascertain if there was any violation of human rights.
The team also inspected the vehicles that were burnt down.
They also discussed the damages caused to the public property with Nanduri and senior police officials. Later, talking to the media, Jayachandran said the SHRC would submit its report to the government in a couple of days.
