JICA pact for peripheral ring road in September
The State government plans to enter into a loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for section I of the proposed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project this September.

The announcement to ink a pact with the external funding agency was mentioned in the policy note of Highways department for 2018-19. The project envisages an improved and decongested path to the Ennore and Kattupalli ports located north of Chennai.
The peripheral ring road will provide better connectivity around the city catering to future traffic requirements, besides ensuring efficient transportation of commodities and improved port connectivity, highway department officials said.
“Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for five sections of the PRR has been prepared by incorporating Intelligent Transport System component which is the first of its kind, along with formation of Minjur bypass,” the policy note stated.
The total cost of the project, estimated at Rs 12,301 crore, includes construction cost of Rs 7,446 crore and land acquisition (LA) cost of Rs 4,855 crore. Officials said the land acquisition for section I from Ennore Port to Thatchur (NH-5), costing Rs 951 crore, is in progress.
