MGR birth centenary: 10 life convicts released from Tiruchy prison
Ten persons serving life term were released from the Central prison here on Tuesday, on account of the birth centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. They were given monetary assistance and new clothes as reformation gift.

During their release, Tiruchy DIG (Prisons) G Shanmuga Sundaram, said, “After the government’s order granting the release of life convicts, the Tiruchy prison administration had sent a shortlist to the government and received the order to release 10 inmates. Nine are from Thanjavur district and one is from Tiruchy district. All the released persons were given Rs 2,000 as financial assistance and a new pair of clothes by the Rotary Club.”
The DIG said those released shall be under the supervision of the probationary officer for three years. If they indulge in any criminal activity, they will be lodged back in prison, he said.
Prison superintendent Nigila Nagendran, said, “As a part of transforming prison inmates into responsible citizens, the state government has opted to inaugurate a bakers’ section in all nine central prisons, including the Tiruchy central prison. The baking machines will be installed here soon.
Subsequently, the bakery products will be sold in the prison shop. We have requested the Health Department to obtain permission for selling the bakery items to the public.”
