A UGC circular issued to all Vice Chancellors sought to enhance regular interaction and student counselling and organise anti-ragging workshops, seminars and other creative avenues to spread the idea of a ragging-free campus.
Basic measures, which must be adopted by the university, include constitution of anti-ragging squad, printing anti-ragging warning posters, updating websites with contact details of the anti-ragging squad, seeking undertaking from parents and installing CCTV at vital points in the campus.
Counselling and monitoring steps include regular interaction and counselling with the students to identify if anyone was or is being ragged. Surprise inspection around the campus would help prevent ragging or any uncalled-for behaviour.
The UGC circular said that events like anti-ragging workshops, seminars and other creative avenues should be organised to spread the idea. Similarly, safety and security apps, without affecting the privacy of the individual, can be creatively deployed.
“Any violation of UGC regulations or if any institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or does not act in accordance with these regulations or fails to punish perpetrators of incidents of ragging suitably, will attract punitive action under the UGC Act,” the circular warned.
