Horticulture crops coverage to go up by 44,250 acres
The state government has proposed to sanction Rs 34.45 crore to increase the acreage of horticulture crops in 2018-19 fiscal.

Announcing the same in the Assembly, while replying to the debate on demand for grants for his department, state Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu said the horticulture crops offer good profit to farmers.
Hence, Rs 34.45 crore would be sanctioned to increase the acreage by 44,250 acres in the current fiscal, he said. The Minister also announced Rs 7.35 crore to provide 40 and 50 per cent subsidy respectively to promote onion (shallots and Bellary onion) cultivation and develop 636 warehouses to store the produce in all districts this year.
In a bid to promote kitchen garden in urban and suburban areas, the government has also offered to allocate Rs 20 lakh to supply two lakh seedlings at 40 per cent subsidy to the people.
A sum of Rs 10 crore has been provided to offer short-term skill development training and promote horticulture among 7,000 rural youths this financial year.
The training would be offered through horticulture training centres at Madhavaram in Tiruvallur, Kudumiyanmalai in Pudukkottai, Thali in Krishnagiri and Ooty in The Nilgiri districts besides government horticulture farms, Doraikkannu informed the House on Tuesday. Another Rs 4.20 crore would also be sanctioned to train 500 apprentices.

- Rs 2.84 crore to provide skill development training and supply safety kit to farmers for handling fertilisers with caution
- Rs 1.09 crore to supply pherotrome traps at 50 per cent subsidy to control pink bollworm attack on cotton crops
- Rs 1.19 crore to popularise paddy variety “MGR 100” among farmers
- Rs 9.35 crore to offer 50 per cent subsidy to construct greenhouses measuring two lakh meters to cultivate colour capsicum (bell peppers) in a protected environment
- Rs 1 crore to develop value addition centre for traditional flowers in Madurai Rs 2.28 crore to increase coffee cultivation and promote trade in farms run by tribes in The Nilgiris, Salem and Namakkal.
- Rs 30 crore to construct 7,500 metric ton capacity multi-storeyed godown to store agriculture produce in Gingee and Viruddhachalam
- Rs 30 lakh to procure 500 kg capacity electronic weighing machines for 150 regulated markets
- Rs 1.50 crore to develop information centre to educate farmers on availability, pricing and subsidy for agricultural machinery
- Rs 60 lakh to reclaim and intensify agricultural activities in lands where seemai karuvelam (Prosopis Juliflora) were weeded out in Ramanathapuram
- Enrolment rate of horticulture diploma course at Pechiparai in Kanniyakumari to be doubled to 80
- Separate wings to be created for crop insurance to monitor insurance scheme implement and redress grievances on field
