Students, teachers turn to printouts as government fails to distribute textbooks

Causing trouble for teachers and students alike, the Education Department, which had promised that the textbooks would be distributed by the first week of June, is yet to send the new edition.
As this affected the smooth functioning of classes, both students and teachers are forced to depend on printouts of e-books uploaded on Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation so that the can get on with the syllabus without further delay.
“We waited for few days after the school reopening, but there is no sign of textbooks coming in. Therefore, students themselves came forward and contributed printouts,” K Selvi, a private higher secondary school teacher, told DT Next.
As printouts of all textbooks would cost a considerable amount, students in some schools have worked out an arrangement wherein one would bring copy of a textbook, say Tamil, while another would bring mathematics textbook. “It is going on like this till now,” added Selvi.
In some schools, teachers themselves are taking the initiative of bringing printouts of the e-book. “At least the textbooks could be downloaded from the website,” P Geethalakshmi, a Class XI teacher in the city, noted without irony.
Her school management has asked all teachers dealing with the new syllabus to begin classes using printouts instead of waiting for the textbooks to arrive. Geethalakshmi added that the teachers were assured of the money spent on this would be reimbursed.
