According to sources, the cleanliness drive was very much a part of the Governor’s itinerary. Arrangements were made for his visit to the bus stand, where National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers and government officials waited with brooms.
As scheduled, Purohit reached the bus stand, but in a sudden change of mind, he moved away without launching the cleanliness campaign.
Sources later confirmed that the Governor was upset as the venue looked clean. Garbage was dumped in one specific spot for him to launch the cleanliness campaign.
Consequently, Purohit, who was reportedly unwilling to take up sweeping, quietly left the place.
Earlier, the Governor was greeted with black flag protests by DMK workers near the Anna Statue on Paramathi road. Police arrested as many as 293 persons including Paramathi-Velur MLA KS Murthy were arrested for the protest. Purohit received grievance petitions from the public and took part in a slew of other programmes organised by the District Administration.
