Chinna Pillai shot to fame when former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee fell on her feet at an award function. She had received the award from Vajpayee for her work as the in-charge of Kalanjiam, an organisation that worked for the development of women.
Now, she is associated with ‘People’s Leaders Development Board’, an initiative of Kalanjiam, which is focused in developing next generation leaders.
Recently, she was conferred upon the Avvaiyar award by the State for playing a pivotal role in the new initiative.
Pillai said that due to the liquor menace, many women lose their husbands and their families. Recently, she said she had heard of three men severely affected due to drinking problem. She had taken them to Madurai government hospital but they could not be saved. Their families are now struggling to meet their ends and therefore the State must shut down the liquor shops, said Chinna Pillai.
She also highlighted the problems of child marriage and usury, faced by the women. She also expressed concern that many of the NGOs were involved in usury and exploited women.
