State refutes LoP’s charges on rice production stats

The state issued a rejoinder rubbishing the charges of Leader of Opposition MK Stalin, who urged the state government to release a white paper on rice cultivation citing media reports showing discrepancy in the claims made by the AIADMK regime in 2013-14 and 2014-15 fiscals and the Handbook of Statistics on Indian States released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

As per the rejoinder, the government said it doesn’t have to inflate the figures as alleged by the Opposition leader and to divert the people’s attention. Noting that the government was recipient of Krishi Karman Award issued by the Centre on four occasions including the recent one since 2011, the government said the discrepancy in data between the state and central agencies were due to the change in the methodology employed. “Centre calculate the rice yield based on several indicators and use it to make policy decisions regarding agriculture whereas the data provided by the state has more credence and is more scientific in terms of precision,” the rejoinder read.
