Sources told DT Next that a team comprising around 70 personnel led by Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar Abhinav has interrogated several witnesses to get as much evidence as possible about the incident.
As part of their investigation, the CB-CID sleuths have collected guns that were allegedly used during the firing incident. The weapons are likely to be produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Kovilpatti soon.
Forensic experts, who were part of the team, examined the vehicles torched during the protests, mostly on the premises of Thoothukudi Collectorate.
The CB-CID team also visited various localities including Third Mile area, Anna Nagar and Threspuram, a coastal hamlet, where intense violence broke out during the protests.
Responding to allegations that several injured persons currently undergoing treatment have become permanently disabled, sources said the claim could only be ascertained based on the ‘wound certificate’ issued by the hospitals.
Meanwhile, Thoothukudi Government Hospital sources said eight persons with orthopaedic problems currently under treatment are recovering gradually.
A total of 105 persons with minor and major injuries were admitted to the GH in the immediate aftermath of the May 22 incident. The count came down to 21 on the next day, sources added.
Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday refused to cancel the bail granted to 65 people, who were arrested on charges of rioting during the anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi on May 22.
When a petition filed on behalf of the State government seeking the quashing of bail came up for hearing, Justice GR Swaminathan refused to entertain the plea citing lack of evidence.
