Police said the unidentified man, who was driving the SUV, had lost control of the vehicle due to over-speeding and ploughed into a group of people waiting at the bus shelter.
The SUV overturned after hitting the bus shelter and the driver managed to escape from the spot.
The dead were identified as C Ilangovan (55) and M Marudhamuthu (70).
The injured, including a 15-year-old school boy were admitted to the government hospital.
Furious over the incident, locals resorted to a road-roko agitation demanding the authorities to set up a speed-breaker.
Thereafter, senior police officials held talks with the agitators and restored normalcy.
The Keelapalur police have registered a case in this connection and a search is on for the SUV driver, who is said to be a functionary of a newly floated political party.
