Addressing reporters at Thoothukudi airport on Sunday she said the AIIMS hospital would be a bonanza for the people in need of medical services in the southern region of the state. Around 13 districts will benefit by the establishment of the facility, she added.

On the first anniversary of the GST roll out, she said the tax structure has created a revolution in the Indian economy. The government estimated Rs 12 lakh crore of GST collection as target last year, and this current fiscal, it is expected to collect Rs 13 lakh crore. In the wake of GST implementation with the ‘one nation, one tax’ concept, many had come under the regulation of tax bracket.

Refuting charges made by the Congress party, she said all taxes were brought under one umbrella and there is no variation in taxation.

Referring to benefits of GST, she said prices of 1,300 items have been reduced and the GST is benefitting the people by and large. Citing these factors, she felt happy that the GST had no setbacks.

Responding to a query on the ongoing protests against Salem-Chennai eight lane Green Corridor project, she said more awareness need to be created among the protesters, especially farmers, whose legitimate demands and concerns would be taken into consideration as cited by the Centre. This road infrastructure project is for the good of people, aiming to ease congestion of vehicular traffic.

“The Green Corridor project would reduce about 30 per cent of traffic congestion. But, those against development in Tamil Nadu had been deliberately indulging in spreading false propaganda in the minds of innocent people,” she said.

The opposition parties were attempting to create ‘Thoothukudi like situation’ in Salem. Fishermen, who took part in the anti-Sterlite rally in Thoothukudi on May 22 where 13 persons were killed, blamed the members of ‘Makkal Adhigaaram’ an outfit, for the violence, but the opposition parties remain silent on the revelation, she added.
