According to reliable sources in the DMK, Stalin has been initiating steps to ensure the party’s victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and local body polls and has also been drafting strategies for winning the Assembly polls. For this, he had commenced the meeting of office bearers across the state and rejected some of the non-performers based on personal enquiry with party workers.
Accordingly, the DMK headquarters has come out with a plan to end dual posts in the party and plans to encourage dedicated workers who would be committed to the organisation. Based on this, the party office bearers have started sending letters to members to surrender one of their posts.
In Tiruchy, more than 100 office bearers, including 15 district level office bearers such as Lalgudi MLA A Soundarapandian, have sent their letter of resignation of posts except for one.
“Appointments for these posts would be made gradually for which the headquarters has asked for the list from the district secretaries,” DMK sources said.
Stalin himself has decided to retain only the working president’s post. “The party headquarters would soon make the official announcement regarding this,” said the source.
The prestigious treasurer’s post, once held by veterans like MGR and M Karunanidhi, may reportedly go to one of the senior most leaders in the party. Stalin’s confidant EV Velu is tipped to be the favourite to get it.
Though Velu’s elevation could leave some senior leaders redfaced, Stalin would most likely choose the former food minister whose proximity to the leadership has been an irritant to others in the party, especially seniors.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Stalin is likely to vacate the office of party treasurer shortly. An announcement from the DMK high command could be made after the Assembly session.
