Bystanders had found Bala Dhandyudhapani wandering near the new bus stand on Saturday night. He was in an inebriated condition. On suspicion, a couple of persons approached Dhandyudhapani and sought his whereabouts. As he was unable to respond coherently, they let him go after issuing a warning.
But later as a two-wheeler was reported to be missing from the area, and as the same person was found near the new bus stand on Sunday, locals thought he was responsible for the theft and thrashed him.
Although the two-wheeler was found parked some distance away, its owner stated that he suspected Dhandyudhapani to have attempted the theft.
Upon receiving information, Vellore north police rushed to the spot and saved the man. As he was still in a drunken state, the cops took out his mobile phone and contacted his daughter. She was reported to have told the cops that her father had gone to Chennai and on the way back had got down at Vellore for a drink. She also said that her father was under acute stress but added that he was not a thief.
Following this, the police took Dhandyudhapani to the police station for further inquiry.
