Wind energy caters to power needs in Thoothukudi

Three of the five units, each with a capacity of 210 MW, at Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station (TTPS), have been made operation. The three units include the second, third and the fifth units, said sources on Sunday.

While the first unit has been kept on standby mode on Sunday, the fourth unit of the station remains under a fifteen-day annual overhauling, sources from the TTPS added.

With the suspension of power generation from the two units, there’s a production shortage of about 420 MW, the sources said.

The energy generated through means of wind turbines touched 4,000 MW on Saturday in Tamil Nadu. The rise in wind power generation has brought down the quantum of thermal power generation in this station, sources told DT Next.

To utilise the wind energy, which is a source of clean energy and is cost effective in production, the first unit was kept idle. The overhauling works of the fourth unit is scheduled to be over in three days.

The State’s daily average consumption of electricity ranges from 14,000 MW to 15,000 MW. On Friday, its consumption recorded up to 14,900 MW, while on Saturday it was 14,000 MW. However, the consumption shot up to an abnormally high recording of 15,825 MW on July 5.

The energy sourced from wind turbines were considerably high over the last two days. Among the total contribution of wind energy, TANGEDCO’s Tirunelveli Circle of Non-Conventional Energy Source played a phenomenal role.

From the wind turbines stationed an Aralvaimozhi, Shencotta, Muppandal, Kayathar, Eppodhumvendran, Tenkasi, Radhapuram, Vadakkankulam and Kudankulam under the Tirunelveli Circle, its contribution was 2,400 MW on Saturday and its generation could go up to 2,900 MW by the end of July.

The early onset of Southwest monsoon could deliver the goods much on expected lines. The Tirunelveli Circle was engaged in sourcing energy with the aid of 4,970 high tension wind power generators and 7,260 machines, sources said.
