‘Operation parked cars’ yields Rs 160 crore cash, gold

In a major raid, Income Tax (IT) officials on Monday searched the premises of SPK Group, allegedly patronised by some AIADMK bigwigs, for tax evasion and seized Rs 160 crore cash and 100 kg gold.

The cash and gold were seized from high-end sedans such as Audis and BMWs and big travel bags from the residences of individuals having business links with the SPK group, which is executing state highway projects. The cash seized may exceed Rs 160 crore as the counting is under way.

The officials seized Rs 24 crore from a car in the house of Ravichadran, brother of KN Nehru, a former DMK minister. Ravichandran reportedly manages the realty business of the family of Nehru after the former minister’s brother Ramajayam was murdered in Tiruchy six years ago.

Meanwhile, they seized as much as Rs 28 crore from a BMW car parked in the house of a person called Deepak in Poes Garden, IT sources added. As much as 81 kg of gold was found in car parked in the house of an SPK employee in Perambur.

All the major seizures in Chennai and surrounding areas were from vehicles, said the sources. In the city, seizures were done in seven places, while across the state, 30 places were raided. The SPK Group is a leading civil work contractor and has offices and other establishments in Chennai, Madurai and Aruppukottai.
