Remand prisoner hangs self in Palayamkottai

A 54-year-old remand prisoner allegedly committed suicide at Palayamkottai central prison around 2.30 am on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as P Karuppaiah of Sivagiri, ended his life by hanging himself with his lungi from a toilet window, said sources. The victim’s screams raised an alarm and subsequently, the police personnel, rushed him to the hospital. However, he died on the way. Karuppaiah was accused in a case of attempted murder and was lodged in the prison on July 4.

Perumalpuram police have filed a case under Section 174 of CrPc base on a complaint lodged by the Jailor. Counselling is also being offered at the prisons by psychologists to prevent the inmates from committing suicide.
