According to sources, Kumaraselvan (50), a two-time village panchayat president of south Pazhaverikkadu and a state committee member of AMMK, and his brother Sivakumaran (43) were attending a funeral in their village on July 11.
An altercation broke out at the funeral following which Balamurugan (45), of the same village, lodged a complaint with the Madukkur police against Kumaraselvan and Sivakumaran.
Acting on the complaint, police arrested Sivakumaran on July 16 and picked up Kumaraselvan from his residence the next day.
The police personnel allegedly, manhandled Kumaraselvan after he refused to come to the station. He complained of chest pain on the way and was admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital where he died on Friday.
M Rengasamy, state treasurer of AMMK, and relatives alleged that Kumaraselvan died due to the assault by police.
They also charged that the union secretary of AIADMK had instigated the police to act against Kumaraselvan and demanded that a case be filed against the police personnel, including inspector Anandathandavam and the AIADMK union secretary.
Meanwhile, party cadre and relatives staged a sit in inside the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and refused to receive the Kumaraselvan’s body.
