Brothers drown in quarry near Melur

Two brothers drowned in a pool of water accumulated in a stone quarry at Keelaiyur village near Melur on Sunday evening.

Their bodies were recovered from the site in the late-night hours after a long search, sources said. The deceased were identified as S Sadam Hussein (22) and his brother Saleem (20) of Vellanathanpatti village. They had left the house to take bath in the pool. 

Sources said Sadam Hussein did not know swimming. As both the youngsters did not return home, their parents along with neighbours went in search of them. The parents and the relatives were later informed about the drowning incident. 

On information, the fire and rescue services personnel attached to Melur station rushed to the stone quarry to retrieve the bodies. While the body of Sadam Hussein was retrieved around 10 pm,Saleem’s body was fished out an hour later, sources said. Madurai Collector K Veera Raghava Rao later visited the victims’ house and consoled their parents.
