The residents of Karur and adjacent villages such as Vengamedu, Thanthonimalai, Velliyanai, Gandhigramam, Jegathabi and other hamlets heard a sudden loud noise and reportedly felt the tremor. They ran out of their houses seeking safety. The noise was heard at Kadavur village, located 50 km away.

The noise was audible to villagers even in the tail-end of the Karur district and it reportedly lasted for a minute. However, efforts by officials to locate the source of the noise were in vain. They then contacted the Regional Meteorological Centre and officials there confirmed that there was no tremor or earthquake.

Subsequently, the district administration said Revenue Department officials and police personnel have undertaken a check at all factories and industries in the area to identify the source of the loud noise. District officials said the sound could have come from a supersonic aircraft and an inquiry was on to confirm it.
