According to the cops, the arrested persons, identified as Ilavarasan (23), Vigneshwaran (23), and Velmuthu (21), were picked up from their hideout by the Coimbatore rural police. They were reportedly part of a 30-member gang, who had intercepted a police vehicle and abducted Maharajan (43) a few days ago. The Kerala police had picked up Maharajan from Chennai and were heading to Kerala by a car when the armed gang abducted him away in a cinematic style at Kaniyur toll plaza on Salem-Coimbatore national highway in rural  Coimbatore.

Police sources said that one Jacob from Kerala had borrowed Rs 45 lakh by pledging his luxury car to Maharajan. Though Jacob returned the borrowed amount, the financier failed to return his car and sought more money from him. Based on a complaint, the Palluruthy police in Ernakulam district had registered a case against Maharajan under Kerala Money Lenders Act and Kerala Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to divert police investigations, a petition by Maharajan was sent to the police claiming that Kerala police have cooked up the abduction drama. The Karumathampatty police are investigating further to nab the other accused persons who are absconding.
