DIG says road mishaps on the decline in Madurai

Road accidents, in various parts of Madurai District, have declined by 42 per cent this year, said Deputy Inspector General of Police of Madurai Range, Pradip Kumar.

In Virudhunagar District, accidents have come down by almost 40 per cent this year, according to Kumar. After welcoming the 57th State Police Athletic Meet torch relay in Madurai (South Zone) on Thursday in the presence of Superintendent of Police, N Manivannan, he told reporters at Armed Reserve Police grounds that fatality rate from accidents have come down. 

Accident black-spots are being identified and more awareness on safe driving methods publicised among vehicle users, the DIG said. The torch relay involving scores of police personnel originated from Chennai and proceeding on to Tiruchy (Central Zone). The three-day athletic meet is scheduled to commence at Tiruchy on July 27. More participants were expected to participate in the athletic meet.  Earlier, the Deputy Inspector General of Police flagged off the torch relay, sources said.
