ISRO to produce solar cells to launch rockets, says Sivan

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has embarked on a mission to produce solar cells which would facilitate the launching of rockets carrying satellites, said ISRO Chairman K Sivan during his visit to Kanniyakumari district on Sunday.

After taking stock of infrastructure construction works funded by the ISRO at a Government Primary School at his native Sarakkalvilai village on Sunday, the ISRO chief said that as many as 40 solar-powered rockets would be designed for the launch.

The production of solar cells would be taken up under the ‘Make in India’ programme, an initiative of Central Government, under which several other development projects are being undertaken. Among the 40 rockets which would are to be designed, as many as 30 would be Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rockets while the remaining would be Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark -III (GSLV MKIII). 

Further, the Chairman said it was planned to procure spare parts meant for the ISRO from private players. With these facilities, it would generate employment opportunities for the youth, he said. Earlier, the Chairman was accorded a warm welcome by many villagers on his arrival, sources said.
