Kamal cancelled his promotional tour for upcoming movie Viswaroopam 2 in Delhi and rushed to the city on hearing the news of the demise of Karunanidhi on the evening of August 7. He had visited the ailing leader at Kauvery Hospital a few days earlier.

Kamal praised Karunanidhi’s linguistic skills, “The language that we as actors spoke was his. He had great command over the Tamil. When Tamil people needed a leader, he stepped up and filled that void.”

Kamal also batted for the leader to be granted a resting place on Marina. As the tussle between the Government and members of DMK unfolded into the night, Kamal opined that since MGR and Karunanidhi were the protégés of Anna, Karunanidhi must be allowed to be laid to rest alongside his mentor. He took at jibe at the top brass of the AIADMK for what he considered to be a petty move and added that were MGR alive, he would have granted this request for his friend turned political rival, Karunanidhi.

Kamal was among the scores of leaders and film personalities to pay tribute to Karunanidhi as he lay in state in Rajaji Hall on the morning of August 8, prior to his burial at the Kamarajar promenade on Marina.
