According to School Education Department officials, 95 middle schools in Tamil Nadu are to be upgraded as high schools.
In Vellore district, middle schools located in Vaniyambadi town and in Jolarpet and Walajapet panchayat unions will be upgraded, so would those in Kil Pennathur, Arni, Kalasapakkam and Vembakkam panchayat unions, all located in Tiruvannamalai district.
A government high school for girls is to be created after being bifurcated from the government higher secondary school at Thakkolam near Arakkonam. This apart, orders have been issued for filling up posts of 100 high school heads, 100 elementary school heads and 500 graduate teachers.
In a related move, the Chief Educational Officers of both Vellore and Tiruvannamalai are compiling a list of qualified headmasters to take over as District Educational Officers (DEOs).
“Once the list is drawn up, DEO and related posts will be filled up based on seniority shortly,” sources said, adding that the government felt that the only way to improve the quality of education and results at the Class 12 level was to undertake such measures.
When contacted, Tiruvannamalai Chief Educational Officer V Jayakumar said, “We hope that these measures will lead to improved results in the Class 12 board examinations.”
It may be noted that Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts both recorded poor performances in this year’s Class 12 exams, with Vellore placed at the bottom of the table.
