Visiting the one-day ‘Sugarcane exhibition’ organised by the State owned Arignar Anna Sugar Mills (AASM) in Kurungulam, Annadurai said sugarcane is being cultivated in around 4,000 hectares in the district.

Pointing out to the copious flow of water in the Cauvery, Annadurai said “53,000 cusecs from Mukkombu (Upper Anaicut) and 15,000 cusecs from Kallanai (Grand Anaicut) has been released to Kollidam river.”

Annadurai also said that over 100 workers and 10 tractors are working on strengthening the Kalanai canal.

A large number of cane farmers visited the expo. Several manufacturers exhibited their products like pit digging machines, rotavators, drip irrigation systems and tractors.

The giant sugarcane harvesters kept on display were a big draw, as there was only one such harvester in use so far in the district. The manufacturers of inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and bio-fertilizers also exhibited their products.
