Villagers warned as flow at Mayanur barrage likely to cross 2 lakh cusecs

An alert has been sounded for people on the banks of Cauvery in Karur and Thanjavur as the Mayanur barrage in Karur district is expected to receive an inflow of up to 2 lakh cusecs by Thursday.

They advised the villages in low lying areas to immediately move to safer places as the flow in the already swollen river may go up any time.

A team of officials, particularly from the PWD department, are on their toes to ensure that no calamity took place. PDW officials from Karur said, already 1.40 lakh cusecs was being released from Mettur Dam and 16, 000 cusecs from Amaravathi dam in addition to the 40, 000 cusecs from Bhavani Sagar Dam. All these would confluence in the Cauvery at two points in Karur district. So, there will be a massive flow in the Cauvery when it reaches Mayanur barrage. Hence, flood alert has been issued to people living near the banks of these rivers, particularly at Kattipalayam and Thavittupalayam, which have been identified as the major flood-prone places. Arrangements such as shelter, food, water and other basic items have been arranged for the flood -affected.

Meanwhile in Thanjavur, villages along the Kollidam was was alerted as the flow in the river would cross 2 lakh cusecs mark after midnight of Wednesday. Thanjavur Collector A Annadurai along with officials went to some of the flood-sensitive villages and cautioned the residents. While addressing the villagers, he advised them to extend cooperation to the officials in disaster management activities and relief and rescue operations.
