The district administration evacuated as many as 55 families from these villages and continued its vigil in areas along the banks. Banana plantations in over 1000 acres had submerged due to the flooding. People from the lowlying areas villages like Thavuttupalayam, Mela Mayanur and other areas were shocked after witnessing a sudden flow into their villages.

Trouble started in many areas after the discharge in the Cauvery and the 11,000 cusecs flowing in the Amaravati started confluencing at Thirumukoodalur. Several villages like Thirumukkoodalur, Aranganathan Pettai, Somur, Mela Mayanur were affected by combined flow, which stood at 2.30 lakh cusecs.

Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and AIADMK leader M Thambidurai, who visited the spot, said the district administration has been closely monitoring the situation and the people from the low lying areas have been evacuated.

As the Thavuttipalayam was almost marooned, as many as 56 families were moved to safer places and accommodated in shelters opened at a community hall and panchayat union school near the locality. They were given food, dress materials, bed sheets and other essential items. A medical camp has also been set up in the area as a precautionary measure, he said.

As over 3 lakh cusecs is likely to flow in the Kollidam, round-the-clock vigil is being maintained in 33 village panchayats located on the banks of the river in Thanjavur district.
