Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant to fund new building of school

A new multi-classroom building will come soon up at the Radhapuram panchayat union primary school in Tirunelveli. The building, for which the foundation stone laying ceremony was held recently, is part of the CSR intiatitve of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).

In a statement released on Monday, KKNPP officials said the building, estimated to cost Rs 1.09 crore, will be spread over 6,170 square feet and construction is expected to be completed within eight months.

Upon completion, the two-storeyed building would have eight classrooms with four on each floor. All the classrooms will have sufficient space with proper ventilation.The statement added that the school, which currently has 239 students, will be able to hold its classes in the new building from the next academic year.

The foundation stone was laid by Suresh Kumar Pillai, station director, KKNPP, in the presence of JA Jacob, chairman of KKNPP (CSR committee) and P Srikanth, additional chief engineer (Civil). School headmistress Murugu Tamil Selvi, students and teachers were also present during the function.

The statement said several welfare initiatives through CSR and Neighbourhood Development Programme (NDP) were being undertaken for the development of nearby villages. Last year, funds to the tune of Rs 5.2 crore was spent towards education, sanitation and infrastructure development in the neighbourhood. This year, the nuclear power plant aims to take up more welfare activities and plans to double its funding to Rs 10 crore for the CSR projects.
