In line with the recommendations made by the State government, the HRD Ministry has short listed only one of the six names for the award.

The awardee, identified as, Sathy is from Malumichampatti Panchayat of Coimbatore. She is the only woman teacher to receive the award this year, as against the six awards given last year. Last year, the Union HRD Ministry selected 354 teachers for the award of which 22 were from Tamil Nadu.

There has been a significant reduction in the number of awards this year. The HRD Ministry has decided to give awards to only 45 teachers.

Appalled over the reduction in the number, educationists want to know what went wrong with the system.
