Recyclable substitutes of plastics a hit at Eco Carnival
In a bid to phase out non-recyclable plastics, Thoothukudi Corporation in association with the district administration organised a programme titled ‘Eco Carnival’ (Iyarkkai Thiruvizha) on the premises of Corporation.

The two-day programme which concluded on Sunday witnessed a good turnout, said Thoothukudi Collector Sandeep Nanduri, who inaugurated the event. As many as 30 stalls were put up at the venue, he added.
Corporation Commissioner Alby John Varghese said the programme aimed at bringing alternatives to harmful plastics. The stalls exhibited products such as disposable paper plates, corn-starch plates as well as those made of sugarcane, areca nut tree and other degradable wastes. The stalls also displayed cloth and jute bags.
Moreover, the stalls highlighted the need for printing on clothes instead of flex boards. Various model exhibitions at the stalls stressed on the concept of terrace gardening. Tree species native to the city were also exhibited at the stalls to create awareness about the green cover of the city, the Corporation Commissioner said.
The exhibits also included solid waste management plans highlighting the segregation of wastes into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories for composting. Adequate mechanism meant for building domestic biogas plants also found a place at the programme.
Further, handicrafts made by women self-help group members was a hit among the visitors. Officials of various departments were also present at the venue.
