Inspecting the desilting works in the lakes at Krishnarayapuram near Old Jayankondam in Karur, the Minister said, the temporary works to plug water flow through the collapsed regulator would be completed by Thursday night as the work has been going on round the clock.

“The work has been continuing despite the flow being heavy in Kollidam and it posed a big challenge for the engineers, including a lorry toppling over it,” he said.

“The works had been accelerated after filling the pit with heavy boulders brought from Thogamalai, Pudukkottai and Padalur areas. Even the Army engineers appreciated the methodology, so the government will never take the criticisms of Opposition seriously,” the Minister added.

Responding to DMK president MK Stalin, who said that only 40 per cent of works were over, the Transport Minister asked how can 60 per cent of works would get over within three days till Thursday.

Meanwhile, he said that the survey has been underway for the construction of the new regulator adjacent to the collapsed one.

And a fund of Rs 410 crore has been sanctioned and the works would commence once the water flow stops, he assured.
