The incident reportedly occurred at Rajapalayam South police station on August 26. A Kathir, the Executive Director of Evidence, a Madurai-based NGO sought action against the police on Saturday.
While talking to reporters in Madurai, Kathir said Elampirayan, an MCA graduate, was on his two-wheeler with two of his friends. During a vehicle check up, Sub Inspector Pethi alias Thirumalairaja and Head Constable Iyappan demanded Elampirayan’s personal details in a rude manner. Moments later, the police men passed comments based on his caste and took him to the station. Five police men hit Elampirayan and allegedly tortured him. The police also questioned his mother’s fidelity after learning that his father deserted them.
Elampirayan was taken to Rajapalayam GH for treatment and cases were filed against him stating that he stopped the police personnel from working and used abusive words. Based on the case filed, he was lodged at Srivilliputhur prison and after four days of incarceration, he was released on bail.
For further medical assistance, he consulted doctors in Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital and based on his statement on the alleged torture, a medical legal case was filed. But, no case was filed against the police personnel so far. Citing these incidents, Kathir demanded action against the officials under SC /ST Act.
