S Nagarajan alias ‘Bullet’ Nagarajan (49), who was evading arrest for a long time, was nabbed after police personnel deputed on security duty spotted him moving on a motor bike near Thenkarai. After a hot chase, cops caught him on a street in Thenkarai, sources said.
Recently, Nagarajan, a native of Jeyamangalam village at Theni district, reportedly posted audio clips on social media threatening Superintendent of Madurai Central Prison Urmila and in a subsequent clip intimidated Theni Collector Pallavi M Baldev, Theni Superintendent of Police V Baskaran and Thenkarai inspector of police.
In the leaked seven-minute audio clip, Nagarajan threatened to reveal irregularities happening inside the jail and charged the prison SP with ‘ineffective’ administration.
In his latest audio clip, which ran for around four minutes, leaked on Saturday he allegedly threatened the Thenkarai inspector claiming that he was behind the transfer of many inspectors of police and Thenkarai police station would not be an exemption. He warned the inspector to not touch his associates and aides in Periyakulam, Further, he challenged the police to trace his whereabouts and nab him.
Last week, prison authorities submitted a petition to Madurai Commissioner of Police S Davidson Devasirvatham seeking action against Nagarajan, who claimed himself to be a lawyer, after the release of the audio clip.
He issued the threat to the prison SP after his brother, who was incarcerated in the prison, was punished for demanding sleeping dose from the jail doctor.
When contacted, Baskaran said Nagarajan was not a notorious criminal but faced cases of petty crimes only. A total of 71 cases, including 58 on chain snatching counts, eight house break–ins and others in parts of Madurai and Chennai until 2003. But, no case has been filed against Nagarajan in the last seven or eight years, the SP told DTNext.
Except for one or two cases in which the habitual offender was facing trial, most of the others with criminal charges have been disposed of. In 2003, Nagarajan hoodwinked the police and escaped from their custody in Jeyamangalam, he said after the inquiry.
Two fire-cracker guns, two foldable knives, a name board displaying ‘Sub Judge’, driving license, ATM and PAN cards, rubber stamps bearing ‘High Court Branch Madurai’ and ‘Government of Tamil Nadu/Notary Public’, a journalist identity card under the name of a magazine titled ‘Makkal Suthanthiram’, a lawyer identity card, another claiming himself as a representative of ‘Ahila Indhiya Lanja Ozhippu Padai’ and an advocate’s robe were recovered during his arrest. In addition to this, counterfeit notes, two cell phones and imitation jewellery were also seized, the SP said.
However, the SP denied receiving any threat call directly from Nagarajan. The Theni Collector also denied receiving any call from the history-sheeter. “The accused stays most of the time in Madurai, as his daughter, who is married, resides in Othakadai near Melur and rest in Chennai. He commutes frequently between these two places, sources said.
