Speaking to reporters in Karur, the minister, who had returned after visiting the US and the UK to study the e-bus operations, said that a delegation from the state that accompanied him inspected the e-buses, which comes at a cost of Rs 2 crore per vehicle, in both the countries and explored the possibilities of introducing such vehicles in Chennai.

“Battery charging stations need to be set up at several places.  Though there several difficulties have been identified in introducing e-buses in the state, we are planning to conduct a study. The government will certainly initiate necessary steps to operate them in Chennai and Coimbatore,” he said.

The C-40 team members during their visit to Chennai recently conducted a survey and have identified certain routes for operation and spots to set up battery charging stations.

“The process in progressing smoothly and the service will be available for people very soon. Initially, we are planning to import around 100 battery operated buses directly. Eighty of them will be sanctioned for Chennai and the rest 20 buses will be allotted for Coimbatore,” he said.
