Railways holds trial run of road-railer in Vellore district

Southern Railway (SR) has found a solution to seamless door-to-door goods transportation from the zone. Railway officials on Wednesday conducted a trial run of road railer, a bi-modal transportation unit which runs as semi-trailer on road and wagon on rail, between Melpakkam and Katpadi in Chennai Railway Division.

The Road Railer concept works like this, Goods loaded on to a Road Railer unit in a godown travel by road and is then directly coupled with railway wagons at the terminal.

The unit (with wheels attached as in a normal truck) would be moved by rail and decoupled from the wagon at the receiving end and attached to a truck to be moved on to the final destination.

Road-railers would offer a holistic logistics solution in diverting cargo from road to rail and to offer seamless door-to-door goods transportation, a SR official said.

The dry run of the road railer was jointly conducted by SR and Kirloskar Pneumatic Co Ltd (KPCL), which would bring in the investment and provide these specially designed Road Railers.

The road railers would be operated and maintained by railways. KPCL and its strategic partners would take care of the first- and last-mile (road) operations of the Rail Railers.

The Southern Railway will shortly announce the commercial run of the road railers between Chennai and (Palwal) Haryana in partnership with Kirloskar which will provide the road railers.
