A day after the Supreme Court directed the State government to pay Rs 11.71 crore to a sand importer, the Public Works Department (Mines) on Friday opened online booking of 55,000 tonnes of sand imported from Malaysia, which was unloaded at the VO Chidambaranar Port Trust in Thoothukudi last October.

The booking slot was opened at 4.30 pm, enabling individuals and sand lorry owners to purchase the imported river sand. The facility can be availed of through the website or the mobile app.
One cubic unit of sand is priced at Rs 9,990 and five units at Rs 49,950.
A top official said, “The price decided by the government is not huge, and the government is targeting the individuals. The sand will be sold at Rs 12,000 per unit in Chennai.” He added, “The State still has not paid the sum as we have been given one week’s time to pay it.”
Last year, private contractor MRM Ramiah Enterprises from Pudukottai struck a deal with a Singapore contractor to purchase the imported river sand from Malaysia.
The first consignment arrived at the VO Chidambaranar Port Trust in Thoothukudi.
The issue surfaced when a lorry laden with imported sand was seized by Aralvaimozhi police.
