The fishermen organised an urgent meeting in Thanjavur and discussed the protests against the two trawling nets used by mechanised boats.
They claimed that the two trawling nets eat away the entire sea wealth and that they are left with nothing.
“The usage of twin trawling nets affected the reproduction and other activities of fish in the sea. Also, the flora and fauna of the deep sea is damaged because of the use of these nets.”
They further stated that they demanded officials to instruct mechanised boats users not to use the twin trawling nets.
“The officials conducted a surprise inspection which failed to control the use as the officials gave less importance to the issue. The government should immediately stop the usage of twin nets. If they failed to do so, massive protests and rallies were be held,” they said, The fishermen also decided to surrender their ration cards to the district collector.
