Sources said Palanisamy, 50, Allaligoundanur, lost Rs 3,000 from his mother’s house on August 22. Similarly, on Saturday, Muniandi, belonging to the same area, lost his mobile phone worth Rs 4,000.

The duo suspected P Balasubramani, 15, a student of Class 8, to be behind the incidents as the boy was allegedly in the habit of indulging in small thefts.

The sources added that the two took Balasubramani to a secluded place and questioned him, but he refuted the charges.

After he denied being involved, Palanisamy, Muniandi along with Selvakumar, 39, Manivel and Muniappan, reportedly tied the boy to a pole and beat him up till late in the night.

When Balasubramani’s mother Elangiam, a widow and his little sister  Nandhini, 10, came in search of him, the men allegedly threatened them and fled the spot.

Balasubramani’s mother and sister returned on Sunday morning and were shocked to find him dead.

Elangiam lodged a complaint with Velliyanai police, who secured Selvakumar. The police are on the lookout for the other four who escaped.

A special team has been formed to nab the culprits.
