The new scheme was inaugurated during joint celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Karmaveerar Kamarajar 105th memorial day, inauguration of Tiruvalluvar statue, planting Seedlings and distribution of note books to the students of the government school.
Industrialist C K Kannan interacting with media persons at Urumandampalayam said that instead of offering annadhanam in the temples it would be better and useful if free meals was offered to school students, who come from families with poor background.
He said “though this school has all the infrastructural facilities that are required to provide quality education to the children, the pupil strength of the institution does not seem to be in correct ratio. After the introduction of Morning Free Meals scheme, probably the number of students in the school might increase considerably.”
Kannan said we have also planned various programmes to create awareness among the parents to enrol their children in this school. “As a first step towards this goal, we have started the morning free meals scheme aptly on the Karmaveerar Kamarajar memorial day,” he said.
The industrialist said under the new scheme launched on Tuesday, nutrient foods like egg, milk, idly, dosai and chappathi will be served to the students of the school on all days, except during holidays.
He further claimed that this was the first time in Tamil Nadu that a scheme of this kind has been introduced.
The industrialist expressed confidence that this scheme would spread not only to other districts across the state, but also to the entire country.
To make this scheme a success and to expand to other schools, private companies, NGOs and public should extend their maximum support, he appealed.
“We will also make efforts to start expand this new scheme to all the government schools in Coimbatore district soon”, Kannan said.
