Gang robs 6 persons at knife-point

An eight-member gang of robbers waylaid six persons including a cop on the Salem-Bangalore bypass road on Saturday night.

According to police, John (27), a native of Kerala, had gone to Bengaluru and was heading to Kodaikanal with his friend on a car. On reaching the State Bank Colony area, John had got down for a short break of journey. When a gang of eight persons came in two-wheelers and snatched away his mobile phone at knifepoint. 

Thereafter, an Armed Reserve cop Chellakannu, who was coming through the way near Karuppur area, turned out to be their next target. The gang attacked and pushed him off the vehicle. They then drove away his moped by brandishing the knife. 

Similarly, the same gang threatened two other persons passing by the way and snatched away their mobile phone and Rs 2000. On a robbery spree, the gang members then moved to Omalur where they attacked two persons, Mohan Kumar and Pachiannan. They took away their two-wheeler and cash. 

The control room on receiving a complaint call from the cop, the patrol police immediately rushed to the spot and went on a search. However, the accused persons had escaped by then. 

Meanwhile, police seized the moped of the cop abandoned on a thorny bush near Omalur. The Salem police commissioner K Shankar warned the patrol police as they were not alert on the prominent road stretch that sees a heavy traffic flow even during night hours. 

The Suramangalam police registered a case and a search is on to nab the culprits.
