Sex charge: Students seek action against professor

Over 200 students from Government Arts and Science College at Attupakkam, near Arakkonam attempted to block Arakkonam- Kanchipuram Road near Sendamangalam on Monday condemning the lack of action over a sexual harassment charge against a professor.

Sources said that a professor from English department was accused of having sexually harassed student. Other Students lodged a complaint on behalf of the victim to Vellore Collector SA Raman, who ordered the Tiruvalluvar University officials to conduct an investigation into the charges.

Following this, K Murugan, Vice-Chancellor of the university, visited the college for an inquiry on September 28. However, no action was taken after his visit, sources said. College authorities also allegedly tried to pacify the students to drop their agitation. There were also allegations that the students were threatened. 

On Monday the students shouted slogans demanding action against the professor. Later, they took out a procession and tried to block the road. Nemili police rushed to the spot along with the college officials, who warned the students to withdraw their protest or face dismissal.

Local people, who witnessed the whole action, backed the students and demanded an explanation from the police. Following an assurance from the police, the students called off their stir and dispersed from the spot.
