Selvam alias Selvaraj, 34, native of Rasipuram in Namakkal district, escaped by breaking the net sealed window of the toilet in the hospital. He was arrested by the Coimbatore city police for murdering a nurse from Peelamedu, on November 16, 2015.
The court awarded him ten years of imprisonment and he was lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison last year. A few days ago, Selvam attempted suicide by consuming mosquito coil and was admitted to the prison hospital for treatment.
While undergoing treatment, Selvam attempted suicide by slitting his wrist with a blade, on October 7. He was immediately taken to CMCH for emergency care treatment.
Around 5.30 am, Selvam had gone to the toilet by informing the cop, who was posted to monitor him. The cop stood outside the toilet.
“However, when Selvam failed to return after a long time and there was no response even after knocking the door, the cop on suspicion, broke the door open and found the prisoner missing from the toilet,” police said.
The prisoner had made his way out easily by opening the sealed window net. On receiving information, the Race Course police and prison officials visited the spot and held inquiries.
Special teams have been formed to nab the absconding prisoner. Police sources said that recently, Selvam had told his relative about his plan to murder a man, who had an illicit affair with his wife. So, police are suspecting him to have escaped to execute his plans and efforts are on to track him down.
Meanwhile, Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan placed the armed reserve cop Saravanakumar under suspension for being negligent on duty.
