In his representation to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, DMK propaganda secretary Tiruchy Siva claimed the hike was over threefold and said it would affect the economically lower-class tourists.

“You (Goyal) are well aware how in foreign countries such heritage tourist attractions are maintained keeping in mind the interest of the common man,” he said.

As per his representation, the fares in ordinary, second and first classes from Mettupalayam to Coonoor was to be increased from Rs 10 to Rs 45, Rs 25 to Rs 100 and Rs 185 to Rs 365. For Mettupalayam to Ooty, it could be jacked up for the three classes from Rs 15 to Rs 75, Rs 35 to Rs 145 and Rs 200 to Rs 470.
