Tamil Nadu first to introduce new syllabus for KG section

The new syllabus should be adopted by all the schools including matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu from the next academic year. The curriculum is designed for two years of preschool before Class 1. The curriculum has three major goals, highlighting of key concepts and skills, pedagogical processes and the learning outcomes for preschool one and two.

Tamil Nadu State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) was entrusted the task of preparing preschool syllabus in the State. SCERT Director Dr Arivoli told DT Next on Thursday that currently there is no syllabus for both LKG and UKG. “The new syllabus was prepared by teachers, officials from Social Welfare Department, authorities from Integrated Child Development Services and experts from New Delhi,” he added.

“Our state is the first one to release the syllabus within six months of MHRD’s order,” he said.

The official said that there are several domains to develop gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory skills, cognitive, language and socio-emotional skills. “In addition, monthly theme is introduced for children in the syllabus,” he said. Themes are decided based on the child’s physical and social environment, its understanding of the world and self-relationship with people, he added.

Stating that several interesting classroom procedures has been introduced for pre KG students, he said, daily schedule has been introduced for preschool education from 9 am to 4 pm. Accordingly, there are different time spans to impart various skills among the students. For instance, circle time will provide opportunity for the students to listen, speak and sing songs.
