Gudiyattam forest range officer K Mahendran and forester R Ravi were on duty at the Sainigunta check post on the Tamil Nadu – Andhra Pradesh border when they stopped a two-wheeler driven by one Mohammed Ilayas (25) of Palamaneri. On checking the vehicle, they spotted a bag which when emptied was found to contain anteater scales weighing one and a half kilos.
When questioned, Ilayas confessed that the scales were from an anteater killed in AP and he was taking them to Vaniyambadi from where it was meant to be exported for use in medicines. The two-wheeler and the scales were seized and Ilayas was arrested.
