The accident took place around 10.30 am, when the four belonging to the same family were waiting to board a bus to Madurai.
Even before their bus arrived, a car, which was coming towards them, lost control after one of its tyres burst. Sources said the front-right tyre suffered a burst, which then resulted in the car careening off the road and ploughing through passengers waiting at the bus stand.
The car was proceeding to Sulur in Coimbatore from Kulasekarapattinam when the accident occurred. While Lakshmi (35), wife of Pandi of Vadugapatti, and Marathiammal (65), wife of Muthan, were killed on the spot, Vasanthi (22), wife of Jeyapandi, and her seven-month old male child, were rushed to the hospital. They were, however, declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
Based on a complaint lodged by Jeyapandi (29), Vadipatti police registered a case under sections 279 and 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have arrested N Murugesan (51), the car driver.
While Murugesan suffered minor injuries, three other occupants of the car escaped unhurt. The bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Vadipatti Government Hospital for post-mortem, sources said.
Meanwhile, in another accident, a car collided with a lorry near Hosur in Krishnagiri district leading to the death of four persons, police said.
The occupants of the car had participated in a prayer meeting and were returning when the driver reportedly took a turn without noticing a fast approaching lorry and collided with it, they said.
