Officials said that a sand-laden lorry fell into a sink-hole on the first platform of the Virinjipuram railway station about 15 km from Vellore on Friday.

The Virinjipuram station master immediately informed railway officials at both Katpadi and Jolarpet stations resulting in the rail traffic bound for Chennai being halted at Jolarpet.

The lorry was pulled out by a rail crane brought from Katpadi. As the work consumed time, nearly eight express trains from Chennai were delayed by two hours. It put festive commuters to hardship.
