According to police, Patrik from Chennai wanted to get an MBBS seat for his relative at Jipmer and came to Puducherry to enquire about it. He met Vasantha Kumar and Dhanasekeran, who had informed him that they will be able to get the seat if he paid them money.

Believing them, Patrik gave Rs 60 lakh in several instalments. When they failed to get the seat, he realised that he was cheated and approached the police. However, police refused to register a case.

Following this, he approached the court. Based on the direction of the court, the Orleanpet police registered a case and began the investigation.
